Shipping weight
Keep packing and estimate limits in the comparison.
Look behind the final number
A total is only comparable when the parcel, route, service, inclusions, exclusions, and validity behind it are visible.
Quick answer
State the origin and destination context, packed quantity, actual weight, dimensions, service level, special handling, and the date the figures were checked. Ask which weight basis, currency, fees, exclusions, and validity apply.

Quote anatomy
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Route and service | Origin, destination, service name, handoffs, and stated delivery range. | Different services are not interchangeable because the totals look close. |
| Chargeable weight | Actual, dimensional, volumetric, minimum, or another stated basis. | The billable figure may differ from the scale weight. |
| Inclusions | Pickup, handling, fuel, documents, tracking, insurance, duties or tax handling when explicitly stated. | A lower base charge can omit items another quote includes. |
| Exclusions | Remote area, inspection, storage, redelivery, brokerage, duties, taxes, returns, or other conditional charges. | Excluded amounts can move the real total after the comparison. |
| Validity | Currency, issue date, expiry, capacity condition, and reweigh or remeasure rule. | A dated quote is not a permanent rate or delivery promise. |
| Responsibility | Who packs, measures, books, carries, supports, and handles claims at each stage. | The contact who gives a number may not control every part of the route. |
Volumetric weight
Some services compare physical weight with a dimensional or volumetric calculation based on package size. The formula and divisor vary by carrier, route, service, and unit system, so there is no universal result.
Store length, width, height, unit, divisor, calculated figure, physical weight, and the rule used to choose the chargeable weight. Recheck the current carrier or responsible party before relying on it.
Do not copy a calculator result without its inputs. A small packing change can alter both the dimensions and the charge basis.
Normalize quotes
Use the same packed quantity, carton count, actual weight, dimensions, and special conditions.
Use the same origin, destination, service level, and delivery-speed expectation.
Keep original currency and date; if you convert, record the rate source and time rather than overwriting the quote.
Do not call a quote cheaper when it leaves required services or conditional charges unresolved.
Support, tracking, claim process, limits, and written confirmation can matter as much as the headline amount.
Landed-total limits
A quote may exclude product cost, domestic handling, packing changes, customs charges, duties, taxes, brokerage, inspection, storage, remote-area service, returns, or other events. Which items apply depends on the actual route and current rules.
